When Fear Almost Stole My Magic
Episode 122: Wednesday Real Stories - "When Fear Almost Stole My Magic"
Duration: Approximately 6-8 minutes
Host: Heather V Masters
Show: Choosing Happy Podcast
Episode Summary
In this deeply moving Wednesday Real Stories episode, Heather shares a powerful late-night tube encounter that transformed her understanding of fear, trust, and human kindness. Through vulnerable storytelling about a moment when choosing openness over fear led to an unforgettable act of spontaneous kindness from strangers, she explores how our assumptions can rob us of magical moments.
The Story
Late one evening on the London Underground, Heather found herself alone when a group of energetic students filled the carriage around her. Despite her initial fear and impulse to shut down, she chose to stay open when one student noticed her anxiety and tried to ease her nerves. What happened next - an impromptu performance of her favourite Queen song by the entire group - became one of the most beautiful moments of human connection she's ever experienced.

This Week's Challenge
Reflect on a recent moment when fear made you want to shut down or avoid someone. Ask yourself: Was this fear based on real danger or just a story your mind created? Then identify one small, safe way you could stay open next time that familiar fear creeps in.

Transcript
Have you ever felt that flutter of fear telling you to shut down?
Speaker A:What if staying open leads to magic?
Speaker A:Today, I'm sharing a story about fear, trust, and an unforgettable moment of kindness that changed everything for me.
Speaker A:I'm Heather Masters and this is Wednesday.
Speaker A:Real stories on the Choosing Happy podcast where we dive into the moments that teach us most about choosing courage over comfort.
Speaker A:So stay tuned for this Wednesday's Choosing Happy podcast.
Speaker A:It was late, almost midnight, when I hopped on the tube after overstaying long, longer than I'd planned at a friend's.
Speaker A:It was summer, the carriage was empty, so I relaxed a little, settling into the familiar rhythm of London's underground.
Speaker A:At the next station, the doors opened and around 10 young, loud, energetic students poured in and took all of the seats around me.
Speaker A:Now my heart started racing.
Speaker A:I felt completely overwhelmed, nervous.
Speaker A:It was after midnight and every alarm bell in my head went off.
Speaker A:Here I was, alone, late at night, suddenly surrounded, and my first instinct was to shut down, to put my headphones in, avoid eye contact and pray for my stop to come quickly.
Speaker A:But the guy sitting right next to me noticed that I was tense.
Speaker A:And instead of ignoring it, he leaned over and he said, it's okay, we're cool.
Speaker A:He started chatting with me, just engaging general questions.
Speaker A:What did I do?
Speaker A:Where was I going?
Speaker A:Had I had a good, even clearly trying to ease my nerves?
Speaker A:And then he asked a simple question.
Speaker A:What's your favourite song?
Speaker A:As you probably know from earlier in the week, without hesitation, I blurted out Bohemian Rhapsody.
Speaker A:Because I've always been a massive Queen fan.
Speaker A:And to my absolute surprise, this lad turns to his mates and shouts, right lads, Bohemian Rhapsody.
Speaker A:And they all, every single one of them, started singing to me.
Speaker A:Not at me, to me.
Speaker A:This beautiful impromptu performance just for one anxious woman on a late night tube.
Speaker A:It was incredible.
Speaker A:One of the kindest, most magical moments I've ever experienced.
Speaker A:My eyes still fill with tears when I remember it.
Speaker A:It was just pure joy, pure magic, pure surprise.
Speaker A:And though every nerve told me to shut down, choosing to stay open rather than retreat into fear opened the door to this miraculous moment.
Speaker A:I got home safely that night.
Speaker A:But more than that, I carried with me a moment of pure human kindness that still moves me today.
Speaker A:Now here are three things this taught me.
Speaker A:Number one is to trust your instincts, but know the difference between real danger and fear based stories.
Speaker A:My fear came from assumptions and late night anxiety, not actual threat signals.
Speaker A:However, I have been in South Africa on my own when those threat signals caused me to get in my car and drive away.
Speaker A:Second, lean into safe discomfort.
Speaker A:Sometimes magic and genuine kindness are waiting on the other side of that uncomfortable feeling.
Speaker A:Give it a chance sometimes talk to that stranger if it feels right.
Speaker A:And third, vulnerability invites vulnerability.
Speaker A:When I answered honestly about my favourite song and the other questions, it created a space for them to respond with openness and joy.
Speaker A:Here's your tiny experiment for this week.
Speaker A:Think of a recent moment when fear made you want to shut down or avoid someone, and ask yourself honestly, was this fear based on real danger or just a story your mind created?
Speaker A:Now identify one small, safe way you could stay open next time you feel that familiar fear creeping in.
Speaker A:Maybe it's making eye contact instead of looking away, or responding to a friendly comment instead of saying silent.
Speaker A:Write it down.
Speaker A:Make it concrete.
Speaker A:I know for me it's about reaching out to people and building relationships online, something I used to do so effortlessly but fills with fear now.
Speaker A:So did this story resonate with you?
Speaker A:I'd love to hear about your own moments of choosing openness over fear.
Speaker A:Share them with me in the socials and tag hoosinghappypodcast and let's lift each other up with these reminders that kindness exists everywhere, even today.

Speaker A:And also, if you've got a story to tell, let me know and I can feature you on one of these shows.
Speaker A:Until next week.
Speaker A:Remember, incredible moments often begin when you say yes, even when fear says no.
Speaker A:Choose brave.
Speaker A:Choose open.
Speaker A:Choose happy.
